Food Allergies and the Holidays


The holidays are a happy and cheerful time. Family gatherings and festive food. Yet to many it's the festive food and holiday gatherings that can be a major source of anxiety. Having food allergies or intolerances can be a challenge any day but even more so when you are getting together with family and friends to share meals. 

I was honored to get the opportunity to chat with Meredith Barack on NBC15 yesterday about this very subject. We both have Celiac Disease, so the subject was near and dear to both of us.  Many people have expressed to me an interest in making some safe food for themselves or a loved one this Thanksgiving. This month I received Five Senses Palate created by Sujhey Beisser.  She has a wonderful website full of creative and unique recipes accompanied by beautiful photography. The moment I saw Sautéed Beets with Orange-Cilantro-Mint Dressing and Pistachios I knew it was the recipe I had to make...I LOVE beets. I wasn't able to find candy cane beets (my favorite) but I used golden and red.

All Whisked Up...Polenta Heaven


I am so excited to be part of Wisconsin Whisk, a new culinary collective of Wisconsin Food Bloggers!

Today I am participating in the first "All Whisked-up", a secret website swap.

I was overjoyed that I received Things I Made Today created by Vicky Cassidy.  I love her blog and beautiful recipes that are truly works of art.  After much debate (because she has so many fantastic recipes) I chose to recreate the Warm Polenta Bowl with Clementine Compote.

One word...HEAVENLY.  Such a rich and warm dish that's almost too beautiful to eat.  Both girls loved helping whisk the polenta so there is definitely room for kids to help, although you do have to remind them of being careful near the stove and stay with them while they help.

Homemade Maple Almond Milk


I am a HUGE almond milk fan.  It's my favorite non-dairy milk. My husband recently sent me an article about store purchased almond milk stating "now I see why you make your own".  I do buy almond milk from time to time but once I realized how easy it was to make, how good it tasted and how much money it saved I switched to making it every week. Sure almonds (especially organic) are expensive but you can get a lot of almond milk out of 1 cup of almonds. Store purchased almond milk contains a lot of water and some ingredients you may not want and defiantly don't need. Today I am sharing my favorite recipe and tips on making it.

Honey Avocado Dip


Here is a healthy and sweet recipe perfect for dipping fruit or veggies! A great way to get some healthy fats!  I love this combination because it's sweet and creamy plus avocados have been proven to help the body absorb more nutrients from other foods! I recently took this to an event for my daughter's preschool and it was a big hit. I did notice it had begun to turn a little brown on top at the end of the evening but I had made it 6 hours prior and it had been sitting out for a few hours already. Storing this dip covered in the refrigerator before serving will keep it green.

Lemon Spring Pasta


It's been a busy spring full of opportunities and events so I haven't been able to share as many recipes as I would like. I do have a ton of great ones to share with you in the next few weeks, though.

This recipe is easy and fast to make, perfect for dinner (when time and patience are in low supply). But the best part is how incredibly delicious it is. So make it, close your eyes and take a bite and if you can drown out the noise of your family chaos in the background you'll feel like your sitting at an upscale little bistro. It's fresh, light while still being filling...perfect for spring. My daughters even liked it, which is saying a lot...they have a love/ hate relationship with peas.

Road Trip Snacks!



As Winter winds down (fingers-crossed) most of us are looking ahead to spring and summer and beginning to plan trips. Taking a road trip seems to be on everyone's list this year. Gasoline prices are lower, making it possible for even more people to take a road trip. Finding healthy food on the road has become easier in recent years yet it's still a challenge. A rest stop in the middle of a highway probably doesn't have a whole lot of healthy options. I have rounded up a list of my favorite recipes that are perfect to make and pack for a road trip. Whether you're driving to a family wedding in Nebraska or to the coast to visit the beach, having a ton of healthy snacks will help bring you a little sanity back (that is until your 5 year olds starts asking if you're there yet for the 568th time).

HeartBEET Cupcakes


This recipe is from my personal archives. It's one of those recipes I have made countless times and alway pass along to friends when they ask for a healthy cupcake recipe for their little one's birthday or party yet somehow it never made it to Yummy Sprout.  Well today I remedy that! This recipe is fun (bright pink), healthy and low in sugar (sweetened with honey). Plus, I love looking at the pictures of my now six year old enjoying these cupcakes as a toddler!

Here is a fun and yummy dip perfect for St. Patrick's Day. Ditch the green food coloring and use something naturally green to make your day fun - not to mention the bonus of extra veggies. Very Berry Cereal Bars


Cereal bars make great on-the-go breakfasts or snacks. Unfortunately commercial cereal bars are less than healthy...in fact the leading brand has over 40 ingredients*! My easy recipe has 4 ingredients and takes 10 minutes to make. I like to wrap them in parchment paper to make them easy to grab when I'm in a hurry. They taste great with a chewy and fruity sweetness.

Healing Turmeric Smoothie


We are knee deep in February and knee deep in the winter germies.  Colds and flus are flying around like wildfire.  This smoothie will help your body fight off those colds and flus.  Loaded with turmeric which is naturally anti-viral, antiseptic and immune boosting.  Ginger doubles your fighting power with it's ability to loosen congestion and ease the stomach.  Lastly raw honey has strong antibacterial and anti-microbic properties.  Plus it doesn't hurt that it tastes great!

Blackberry & Cashew "Cheese" Greens Salad


One of my favorite lunch time meals is this inviting salad.  It doesn't even need dressing because the avocado and the vinegar emulsify nicely when you toss the salad.  The flavor combination is great and it's a nutrition powerhouse. The cashews really take on a cheese like quality making this my favorite vegan salad!

Homemade Healthy Chocolates


A box full of chocolates is often full of a lot of other things {besides chocolate} like artificial flavors, dyes, preservatives and other additives. These real food chocolates contain only four ingredients!  They are crazy easy to make and the kids will love helping. But the best part is the taste. Oh the deliciousness - they melt in your mouth.  If you don't have a shape mold an ice cube tray works great too.

Curry Quinoa and Sweet Potato Stew


It's still winter here in the midwest and despite a relatively mild winter the days are still cool and short. Still soup, chili and stew weather 'round here! Here is a warming and healthy recipe that can be made right in the slow cooker. There is not much better than a meal that's warm, healthy and ready for you when you get home. One of the great things about curry is that one of the most essential ingredients is turmeric. Turmeric is known to be a powerful anti-inflamatory, help heal pain and prevent disease. What a flavor combination in this dish; sweet and savory, soft and crisp, warm and cool.

Oatmeal Raisin Almond Pulp Granola


We have new obsession at our house...homemade almond milk.  I admit, I still buy almond milk but the taste of homemade is amazing.  Lately I have been making it myself...a lot. I'll share my favorite recipe soon - it's heavenly.  

A couple things I have learned... soak your almonds overnight whenever possible -it yields more milk, milk will only keep in the fridge for about 4-5 days before it starts to ferment - if it smells funky don't drink it and lastly you'll need to find some uses for the leftover almond pulp.  I've been working on some different ways to use this amazing stuff.  Here is one of my first creations and it's quickly becoming a household favorite.  Loaded with nutrition and healthy goodness that tastes crunchy, chewy and sweet! Granola perfection.

Chocolate Strawberry Kale Smoothie


Happy New Year 2015!  I am so excited to the year ahead and what it will bring Yummy Sprout.  I have a great selection of classes coming up in the next few months with plans to add a few more.  2014 was a great year, I took a look at the top recipes (in terms of readership) and believe it or not the winner (by a 20K landslide) was Homemade Fruit Water, followed by No-Bake Granola Bars, Lettuce Wraps with Beet Pesto, Fruit'shi, and Playdate Snack Mix.  

So let's start the year out right with a healthy smoothie the entire family will love...it basically tastes like a milkshake!  Enjoy.
